Yoga Basics: This class is a foundational Yoga class, in the Integral Yoga style. A perfect introduction to Yoga for beginners, and a wonderful opportunity for practitioner of any level to go back to the basics and deepen their practice. Poses will be explained in detail, and students are given time to find comfort and ease in each posture. The physical asana portion of each class contains: warm-ups, sun salutations, balancing, back bends, forward bends, and inversions. Each class will also include some basic breathing practices, chanting, meditation and a deeply relaxing Yoga Nidra (guided deep relaxation) These techniques are all done with the aim of stretching and strengthening the body and calming and focusing the mind.

Yoga Open Level : This 90 minute class  (or 60 minute express class) includes all the basic elements of a Yoga 1 class with multiple variations tailored to students’ practice level.  Emphasis is on finding proper alignment in the poses and using the breath to find a balance between effort and ease.   Classes include a mix of sun salutations with multiple variations, options for more advanced strengthening and balancing poses, twists, backbends and forward bends, inversions, and options for partner poses. Beginners as well as advanced practitioners are welcome to take this class, and options will be given to fit various practice levels.  Each class will include a brief centering and meditation, a focus on breathing practices (pranayama) and a guided deep relaxation to seal in the benefits of the asana.

Vinyasa : An intermediate level class with emphasis on synchronizing movement and each breath.  The postures s move from one to the next smoothly in a dance like meditation, bringing creativity and flow as students move through the basic postures as well as more challenging variations.  Each class incorporates a mix of strengthening poses, twists, balancing poses, back-bends, and forward bends. Binding, arm balances and more advanced inversions will be made available to those students who have more advanced practices.  Students should be familiar and generally comfortable with the basic poses before trying Vinyasa for the first time

PilatesSpecifically designed to build core strength and muscle definition while maintaining the breath-centered relaxation found in Yoga, this Pilates Mat class gives a total body workout that will firm the core, arms, and lower body. With consistent practice muscles become firm, toned, and lean, and students start to see more definition in the abdominal muscles and back.  Pilates classes help to improve coordination, alignment, and joint stability, and are vigorous while remaining highly focused on correct alignment.  Each class emphasize the mind/body connection and ends with a deep relaxation to rejuvenate the body.

Family Yoga (Toddlers and Up)   Yoga for the whole family! Adult and Child (Toddlers and Up) learn and play Yoga together, using games, discussion, music, and more. Children learn the basics of Yoga, both the physical movements, and the mental practice of focusing and calming the mind, while adults get to stretch, strengthen, and play with their little Yogis. 

Prenatal YogaMeet other future moms in Harlem and the Upper West Side and feel more comfortable and confident during your pregnancy in Harlem Yoga Studio’s prenatal yoga classes.  This class teaches movements and yoga poses to strengthen and tone the muscles and organs needed for labor and delivery and to alleviate common discomforts such as swelling, back pain, constipation and varicose veins.  An emphasis is placed on soothing, relaxing breath work and meditation, giving you space to connect deeply with your innate wisdom to nurture your baby and to enjoy the miraculous process of pregnancy and birth.

Baby & Me : This class is for mothers and newborns (infant to crawling) provides gentle stretching, deep breathing, and moving with your baby.  The class is relaxed and flexible so that you can feed your baby and walk around the room whenever you need to.  Postnatal yoga helps to rebuild core strength, tone back and pelvic muscles, and release tension in the shoulders and chest. Babies get their very first taste of yoga with massage and movement.  Mommies (and other caregivers) have a chance to meet each other and build community.

Vinyasa Basics: This one hour class is a perfect introduction to a flowing Vinyasa class. Students will be taught all of the basic poses and sequences of a Vinyasa class, with attention to alignment and proper transition from pose to pose. Each class includes a mix of strengthening warrior poses, back-bends, forward bends and twists all incorporated into a sun salutation. Simple Inversions may be introduced based on students’ comfort level.

Community Yoga: Community Yoga is an Open Level Yoga Class  designed to be affordable to everyone in the community.  Classes are donation only  - students give what they feel is appropriate (suggested donation $6) and include a mix of sun salutations with multiple variations. Options  are given for more advanced strengthening and balancing poses, twists, backbends and forward bends, and inversions. Each class will include a brief centering and meditation, a focus on breathing practices (pranayama) and a guided deep relaxation to seal in the benefits of the asana.

Full Figured Yoga:  A basic  Yoga Class adapted for the larger, curvier adult or teen.  Yoga is a wonderful way to improve the strength and flexibility of EVERYbody, while relaxing your mind and opening your heart.  In this class classic postures are adapted to be comfortable and accessible for larger bodies. 

Restorative YogaA nurturing and gentle practice using pillows and props, where each pose is held in a fully supported away to allow both the body and mind to complete relax as it deepens into the pose. Beneficial to students with special health needs, those in care-taking positions, and anyone seeking a calming and renewing adaption of the classic yoga poses.”

Harlem Yoga Studio - Class Descriptions

Yin Yang Yoga A traditional Yoga class which includes all of the elements of a Yoga Basics class as well as a greater variety of forward bends, back bends and balance poses.  This is a class for students who feel comfortable and strong in the basic postures and want a more vigorous sequence, and as well as the ability to focus more deeply on alignment and inversions.

Iyengar Yoga: Three descriptive words of Iyengar yoga are: alignment, awareness, and precision.  Students are taught to be attentive to proper alignment in the poses which increases their awareness of the experience of the pose. Ultimately this develops a greater awareness not only within the body, but in all aspects of one's life. All varieties of poses are covered in the Iyegar method: standing poses, forward and backward extensions, twists and inversions, as well as poses for increasing core strength.
HOT Power Hour: Ready to sweat? Power Hour is a rigorous yoga class with demanding strength postures that will have you moving, breathing and sweating! This heated class focuses on building and engaging your core strength to support you in more advanced postures. This class balances, detoxifies and exhilarates the body and mind.

Kundalini Yoga: Join Gianprem for an hour of Kundalini Yoga. Often called "the yoga of awareness," Kundalini Yoga opens your heart, builds strength and gives you the experience of sound vibration through mantra. Kundalini yoga focuses on breath and movement, challenging its students both physically and mentally. While each class will differ, students may expect to jump, hold poses, breathe deeply and repeatedly and even dance! It is great for beginners as it has the flexibility to enable you to push pass your comfort zone as well as offering you the ability to go at your own pace.

Yoga Barre A basic  Yoga Class adapted for the larger, curvier adult or teen.  Yoga is a wonderful way to improve the strength and flexibility of EVERYbody, while relaxing your mind and opening your heart.  In this class classic postures are adapted to be comfortable and accessible for larger bodies. 

Harlem Yoga Shakes (Vinyasa Dance Party!) :  In this high-energy, fun, and sweaty vinyasa class, you will move to the beat of your breath and the music! Incorporating traditional Vinyasa poses with creative adaptations and improvisation, students will work all parts of their bodies, while playfully opening their hearts and minds.
