In the "Back to School" spirit of learning and growth, we are exploring Svadyaya, the yogic principle of self-study and reflection as our theme this September.
Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra says: “Study thy self, discover the divine” II.44
This Self-study involves looking within and consciously noticing our thoughts and behaviors, reading yogic texts (such as the Yoga Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita) and exploring our inner world. In Yogic texts, the word self written with a small ‘s’, refers to ourselves in tour current physical form, our ego. This small ‘self’ is primarily concerned with survival of the physical body, and getting what it wants in all situations. When you read the word ‘Self’ with a capital ‘S’, it is likely to refer to what the Yogis think of as the true self, or the divine within us (Atman). By practicing Svadyaya, we can begin to understand that we are not simply the fears and doubts, of this small 'self', and we can gain clarity on who and what we truly are. As students return to the classroom and routines shift, we have a natural opportunity to assess our behaviors and mental habits and take a non-judgemental look at our inner landscape
This time of year invites us to embrace a study of ourselves more deeply. Is there something you want to explore about yourself? A place you want to expand? A mental or emotional muscle you want to stretch? We invite you to look inward with open curiosity.
